- TRAVIS SCOTT – ‘ASTROWORLD’
First of all, Travis Scott’s love and dedication to the Astroworld is adorable. For those who don’t know, Astroworld was a theme park in Houston, Texas that closed in 2005. Scott used audio clips from the theme park’s closure on his track ‘Watch,’ which was released earlier this year. The theme park was closed to build apartment buildings, which greatly saddened Scott. But more than that, this is a really great album and SICKO MODE is a contender for Song of the Year at the Grammy. Never been a huge fan of Travis Scott before this, but I think I am now.
TOP TRACKS – SICKO MODE, CAROUSEL
- JANELLE MONAE – ‘DIRTY COMPUTER’
Janelle Monae has been one of those artists whose been producing cool music for years, but people finally woke up and noticed with ‘Dirty Computer’. The album is nominated for the Grammy Album of the Year, and for good reason! The fun pop album has a deep political undertone, discussing historic erasure of black musicians, sexual freedom and more. This album is a continuation of Monae’s previous pop-funk sound, but on an elevated level.
TOP TRACKS – PYNK, MAKE ME FEEL
- PARQUET COURTS – ‘WIDE AWAKE’
Parquet Courts might not have topped the charts this year, but this album did not receive enough credit. Produced by Danger Mouse, Parquet Courts have created a suprisingly joyful rock album. But to reduce it to a rock album is demeaning. This album is a mix of new wave, funk, garage rock, and more. It sounds messy, but this album proves to be Parquet Courts most cohesive and established album yet.
- SUPERORGANISM – ‘SUPERORGANISM’
Superorganism are such a rare band and an example of the future of music. The massive seven-piece band are all from completely different countries, they met in music forums online and the rest is magic. Literal magic. Superorganism use the most eclectic, interesting variety of sounds to create their magical pop melodies. Watch their version of Post Malone’s ‘Congratulations’ on YouTube if you want to witness the full extent of their creativity.
TOP TRACKS: THE PRAWN SONG, EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE FAMOUS
- CARDI B – INVASION OF PRIVACY
I mean, chances are you’ve definitely listened to at least some of the songs on this album. It’s a phenomenal debut album, and I genuinely don’t know how Cardi B is going to top it. She has some crazy collabs, including Chance the Rapper, SZA and obviously Migos. I know a lot of people can’t see the reasoning behind Cardi’s hype and think she’s just a crazy chick with a crazy personality, but this album bangs and demonstrates Cardi is not to be underestimated.
