The top 5 places to go dancing in Utrecht

For most students, every start of a new semester is somewhat overwhelming and just crazy busy, the current one being no different. However, sometimes you just need to blow off some steam and have a great night out dancing. Now, Utrecht is no Amsterdam with its fancy clubs but it still offers quite a few opportunities to show off your dancing skills! Here are the best known places to go:

1: Poema

Close to the city centre there’s a place that sooner or later all (international) students will know inside out, and that is Poema. Even though it’s open on several nights during the week, the best day to go is Tuesday – we have awesome ESN-nights and offer cheap drinks and easy entry with the ESNcard! The music is quite varied with the most popular songs of the season so you can dance the night away. The club recently installed new air conditioning so the only things that will be smoking hot are your awesome moves!

With a sophisticated bar at the ground floor and a huge dance floor upstairs, this place is ideal if you want to party in style! The club organises different events varying from jazz nights to themed-parties like Halloween, so make sure you check out their website and find the event that suits you best. The music is quite varied depending on the night and the event, but no matter what, you’ll have a great time dancing with your friends!

Located to the North of the city centre, this is a bit of a stretch for those who like pre-partying and find it hard to get to the club afterwards. However, EKKO organises different nights ranging from crazy punk concerts to disco and house parties. Ticket prices can be a bit steep, especially if you’re planning to buy yours at the door, so you might want to book in advance.

Even though DITO is not a club per se, it still offers a wide variety of entertainment options with its theme nights, carnivals and other exciting events. It’s located near Stadion Galgenwaard so cycling there will also be a workout! A quick tip from the JoCo team: there are often dancehall/soca/reggae parties with the best island song, so if you want to escape from the rainy Netherlands to the Caribbean and you enjoy dancing to exotic rhythms, check it out!

5: Stairway

If you’re looking to spend your whole evening and night out, find your way to Mariaplaats and visit Stairway! It’s got everything: a stylish bar, lounge areas to chill and huge dancing space. Different DJs provide the best beats so you’ll only be sitting down if you get too tired. Stairway also hosts weekly salsa, bachata and kizomba nights in cooperation with SalsaProject Utrecht every Tuesday, so you have no excuse to stay at home. 🙂

Extra: Union Salsa Dance Company

For those of you who got excited about the salsa nights at Stairway, we have good news: a club on Biltstraat organises Latin parties with the best music to dance to! The event takes place every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month and DJs provide the hottest beats of salsa, bachata, kizomba and zouk in two huge dancing areas. If you still don’t know the steps, fear not: the company also offers dance courses.

As you can see, the list goes on and on and it’s impossible to spell out all the fun places where you can get your freak on. What places have caught your attention? Share your tips with us in a comment!

  1. Contact local venues, and ask if they have any support slots that might
suit you, make friends with other touring acts and see if you can jump on a tour with
them, be supportive of your music community
and they will be supportive back.

  2. Thanks for your selection.
If I can, I would add a 6th contender as “Bassment”; a new club in Voorstrat expert in making your party happening.
So if your dance is the kind that need it’s own event, bring it to Bassment 😉
