While the sun is still hesitantly making its way back into the Dutch skies, Utrecht can’t wait any longer for the festival vibes that come with that shiny yellow disk. It is already organising three big festivals: the 3fm awards and the Utrecht University lustrum in Tivoli Vredenburg, and the Tweetakt festival on different locations. When, what, why, who? Find out in this article!
Monday 28th: 3fm awards
Radio channel 3fm organises their awards festival every year. Since a few weeks, you can vote for your favourite Dutch artist in different categories: best band, best live act, best album and many more. All this use of ‘best’ implies that the best artists are coming and… they are! Starting in the afternoon, many of the nominees will give performances in one of Tivoli’s five concert halls. If you like Dutch artists, this is certainly a festival you don’t want to miss. The line-up includes some big names like Typhoon, Chef’Special, Sef, Haevn and De Staat. Don’t you recognise any of these names? Then this is a fine way to discover some new bands.
When? Monday 28th of March
Thursday 31st: UUnited lustrum festival
This year, Utrecht University celebrates its 380th birthday. And what better way to do that than by throwing a festival-like party in Tivoli? Even though it follows quite close to the 3fm awards, it is worth visiting them both, for they differ sufficiently. The UUnited program is mostly filled with names that may not be that widely known, among which also a poet, saxophonist, pianist, some orchestras and international artists. The styles of music vary from intimate singer-songwriter to funky jazz to folklore rock to pop with a punky edge. This is certainly going to be a sweet birthday party!
When? Thursday 31st of March
1-17 of April: Tweetakt festival
This festival goes even further than the UUnited lustrum: besides music, it is also a platform for theatre, art galleries and installations, dance and cabaret. From the 1st till the 17th of April, a fulltime programme will be organised on two different locations in the city: the festivities centre at Neude square and the fort Ruigenhoek. The activities will continue in the fort during weekends until the 29th of May. You can buy a separate ticket for each show, so you can decide exactly what you want to see!
When? 1-17 April (every day); 9th April – 29th of May (weekends only)
Entry? Entry prices differ for each show. Find your tickets and more information here (available in English)
So what do you think, is there anything to your liking? We sure hope to have made you as excited as we are for the new festival season and to see you all at the performances. Have fun!
